HKMA Master of Environmental Engineering Management Programme Now Opens for Applications

13/1/2001

In view of the successful launch of the Master of Environmental Engineering Management (MEEM) Programme with the University of Technology, Sydney last year, the Hong Kong Management Association(HKMA) is proud to announce that the second intake of the MEEM Programme is now open for applications and the deadline will be 10 February 2001.

In recent years, the Hong Kong community, as other major cities in the world, has been very concerned about environmental protection and the Hong Kong SAR government has placed great emphasis on the quality of our environment and the concept of sustainable development. It is now a consensus that the correction of past environmental abuses and the prevention of future abuse will be the most critical tasks of the Hong Kong business sector and the society as a whole.

With this major change in public awareness, there is a significant demand in Hong Kong for engineers and other environmental professionals with enhanced skills and knowledge in related areas of environmental engineering management. Such professionals are sought after by numerous enterprises including the water supply and sanitation industry, waste management industry, manufacturing and energy industry, housing development and construction industry, town planning and transportation industry, and in the rapidly growing environmental management sector of the economy, including rehabilitation of degraded areas as well as minimising the environmental impact of new activities.

The Master of Environmental Engineering Management Programme caters to Hong Kong in-service engineers, scientists, technologists, surveyors, health and other environmental professionals as well as business executives who perform, or who aspire to perform, environmental engineering management tasks. It provides a valuable opportunity for participants to earn a widely recognized Master Degree conferred by a prestigious Australian university through part-time study.

The MEEM Programme is of 15-month duration and is built on a 48-credit point structure with 8 six-credit point subjects comprising 6 cores and 2 electives. All subjects are delivered through a combination of distance learning, self-directed study and study group meetings. The core subjects have additional intensive weekend seminars which are held in Hong Kong and conducted by UTS academic staff. Discussions with academic staff of UTS may also be conveyed via fax or e-mail.

Candidates with a degree in engineering or other technological/applied science field and suitable experience will enrol directly into the MEEM Programme. Candidates without a degree but with other acceptable qualifications and relevant experience will enrol in the Graduate Certificate in Environmental Engineering and Management and, on successful completion of the four subjects in the Graduate Certificate, will transfer into the MEEM with full credit for completed subjects.

Credit exemptions may be granted to candidates who hold an appropriate postgraduate qualification, or relevant post-experience courses previously done, e.g., The Hong Kong Management Association/Lingnan Joint Diploma in Management Studies (DMS).

With 25,000 students, 925 academic staff and 1,193 support staff, the University of Technology, Sydney is one of the five largest universities in Australia. It offers a wide range of courses from accounting to animal ecophysiology, from Bachelor Degrees to Doctorates. Apart from this Master of Environmental Engineering Management Programme, the UTS and the HKMA also jointly offer two Master courses : the Master of Engineering Management and Master of Arts in Training and Human Resourse Development.

Interested parties are reminded to apply for the MEEM Programme before 10 February. For course enquiries, please contact Mr Marco Ho on 2774 8541. You are also welcome to visit the HKMA website at WWW.HKMA.ORG.HK.
