A. About the Professional Manager Scheme

The Professional Manager (PMgr) Scheme is established as a benchmark which will permit business to look at the holders of this designation with reasonable confidence as to their management ability and professionalism. The route to Professional Manager is characterized by lifelong learning and development.

B. Benefits and Privileges

C. Admission Requirements

Executives who are eligible to apply must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. All applicants of the Professional Manager Scheme must be Full Members of the Association.

    For non-member applicants, they could apply Full Membership and Professional Manager Scheme at the same time. To qualify as a Full Member, the applicant must:

    • Have reached the age of 30 years and have had a minimum of 8 years of experience in management, at least 3 of which have been at high executive level; or
    • Hold recognized academic degrees or professional qualifications and have had a satisfactory number of years of practical experience.

  2. All applicants must have satisfied the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements of 40 hours over the last two years.

    CPD hours will be counted if the applicants have completed programmes related to management and recognized by the Association, e.g. seminars, workshops, conferences, meetings, in-house training, distance learning courses as well as awarding-bearing courses such as certificate, diploma and degree programmes. Double CPD hours will be given to participants of programmes organized by the Association.

1. Undergraduate and Post-graduate Qualification

- DBA, PhD, MBA, Masters, Bachelors and Post-graduate Diploma Programmes Up to 40 hours annually
2. Diploma Programmes - Management-related Diploma and Professional Diploma programmes (e.g. Diploma in Management Studies, Professional Diploma in Marketing Management, etc.)

Up to 40 hours annually
3. Contribution to Management Theory and Practices

- Authorship of management-related publications such as journals, articles, books, etc.

Up to 40 hours annually
4. Short Courses - Management-related certificate programmes and distance-learning programmes Up to 30 hours annually

5. Seminar, Workshop, Conference and Corporate Visit

- Attending management-related seminars, workshops, conferences and corporate visits. Up to 20 hours annually
6. Contribution to the Community - Serve on committees of management organizations
- Participate in community work such as delivery of speeches at seminars

Up to 10 hours annually
7. In-house Training or Self Study - In-company training programmes for skills and knowledge enhancement
- Reading management-related publications, articles, joumals, etc.
- Online research

Up to 5 hours annually

For new applicants who are unable to meet the CPD requirements, they may complete any one of the following workshops organized by the Association:

A 2-Day Seminar on The Fundamentals of Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Managers 16 hours
A 2-Day Seminar on The Art of Managing People 16 hours
A 2-Day Seminar on Training the Trainer (English) 16 hours
A 2-Day Seminar on Building and Leading Team Successfully 16 hours
A 2-Day Workshop on Managing the Training and Development Function 16 hours
Edward de Bono`s Programmes on Six Thinking Hats / Lateral Thinking Applications 8 hours each
ENS International Consultants Intensive 2-Day Workshop on Negotiating and Influencing Skills 16 hours
How to Manage Problem Employees and Administer Their Performance Improvement Process 16 hours
IRCA (IQA) Approved Internal Quality Auditor Training Course 16 hours
Professional Negotiation and Influencing Skills 16 hours

Successful applicants may use the designatory letters "PMgr" for a period of 2 years from the date of award. List of Professional Managers will be posted on the website of the Association.

D. Renewing the Professional Manager Status

To retain the title and designatory letters of Professional Manager (PMgr), executives must satisfy the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirement of 40 hours every two years. They must update their CPD submission bi-annually by completing a CPD Declaration Form on or before the renewal deadlines as follows:

1 June; or
1 December

E. Application and Annual Subscription Fees
Application fee: HK$500 (Non-refundable)
(For existing Full Members, application fee will be waived.)
Annual subscription fee: HK$1,100 from January to December 2018
(inclusive of Full Member annual subscription fee of HK$650)

All subscriptions would be due on the 1 st day of January in each year. For Professional Manager approved after 30th June of the year, he or she will pay only one half of the annual subscription for such year.

Application and annual subscription fees are subject to review on an annual basis.

F. Application Procedure

Applicants must submit the following to the Secretariat:

  • Professional Manager Application Form
  • Documentary evidence of continuing education such as certificates, transcripts or attendance records
  • A crossed cheque of HK$1,100 (including application fee: HK$500 and full-year subscription fee: HK$650) payable to "The Hong Kong Management Association"

G. Suspension of Status

The Professional Manager status will be suspended under the following situations:

  • A reminder will be sent to current Professional Managers reminding them of renewal and CPD requirements. If a completed CPD submission is not received before the deadline, the Professional Manager will be considered as not having satisfied the renewal requirements and the status will automatically be suspended.
  • A reminder will be sent to all Professional Managers at the end of each year reminding them to remit subscription fee for the coming year. If such subscription be not paid within 14 days from the date of such request, the Professional Manager status will be suspended.

    A maximum lapse of one year of the status is allowed. During the suspension period, the name of Professional Manager will be removed from the list on the Association`s website.
H. Termination and Re-application for Professional Manager Scheme

If the status is lapsed for more than one year, a notice will be sent to these former Professional Managers that their status has been terminated. They will need to submit a new application should they want to reinstate their status in future.

I. Withdrawal

A Professional Manager may withdraw the status by submitting a written request to the Membership Department of the Association.

However, the Professional Manager is not entitled to the return of any subscription being paid to the Association.
