THE HKMA LAUNCHED THE INAUGURAL
HONG KONG SUSTAINABILITY AWARD 2016/17

The Hong Kong Management Association has launched the inaugural Hong Kong Sustainability Award today (27 October) at its Launching Ceremony cum Briefing Session held on 3/F, Tower 2, South Seas Centre, 75 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, KOWLOON.

Officiated by Mr James Thompson, Chairman of the Association and Dr Delman Lee, Chairman of the Award Organizing Committee, the event attracted over 100 guests and members to attend.

At the event, Mr Thompson said, "Businesses around the world are giving more weight to sustainability in their strategic development. Being an international financial centre like Hong Kong, the call for keeping in pace with the world in practicing sustainability is imminent." He further added, "Through this Award, public recognition will be given to organizations demonstrating a commitment to sustainability in their operation while achieving good organizational performance. By putting together advisable cases of sustainability strategies and initiatives, it is our aim that this Award will serve as a platform for organizations to benchmark the best practices of sustainability. We hope to see that more companies will set off for their sustainability journey."

We have put in much effort to ensure that the Award Scheme is relevant and beneficial to Hong Kong’s business environment," added Dr Delman Lee.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE HONG KONG SUSTAINABILITY AWARD

  • Through a holistic approach, the Award brings recognition to organizations that have demonstrated due consideration to the economic, social, and environmental aspects of sustainability while achieving good business and organizational performance.
  • The Award is developed by a pool of business leaders and sustainability experts, and the approach of the Award is appropriate to Hong Kong business environment.
  • The Award opens to all organizations registered in Hong Kong, from private to public sectors, regardless of their sizes and nature of businesses or services.
  • The Award advocates cross-sector sharing of best practices of sustainability, and inspires organizations to entrench sustainability into their operation and culture with the aim of achieving long-term business sustainability.

OBJECTIVES

  • To raise awareness of the business community of the importance of sustainability
  • To give public recognition to organizations demonstrating a commitment to sustainability in their operation while achieving good organizational performance
  • To provide a platform for organizations to benchmark best practices of sustainability

ELIGIBILITY

  • The Award is open to all organizations from the public or private sector.
    • Organizations registered under the Business Registration Ordinance (Chapter 310) or incorporated under the Companies Ordinance (Chapter 622) or the predecessor Ordinance (i.e. the old Company Ordinance (Chapter 32))
    • Non-governmental Organizations/ Non-profit-making Organizations/ Social Enterprises such as educational institutions, healthcare institutions, charitable institutions, social service organisations, social enterprises, statutory bodies, chambers of commerce and professional bodies
    • Government Bureaux /Government Departments

AWARD CATEGORIES

The participating organizations will be categorized according to the number of employees under the organizations` span of control. The three Award Categories include:

  • Large organization (organizations with more than 500 employees)
  • Medium-sized organization (organizations with 101 to 500 employees)
  • Small-sized organization (organizations with less than 100 employees)

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

The following awards will be granted by the Panel of Judges:

  • Hong Kong Sustainability Award will be awarded to organizations demonstrating excellent achievements in sustainability.
  • Certificate of Excellence will be granted to:
    • Large organizations having demonstrated commitment to all three key elements of sustainability (i.e. the Economic, Social and Environment dimensions) in the judging criteria;
    • Medium-sized organizations having demonstrated commitment to at least two key elements of sustainability in the judging criteria; and
    • Small-sized organizations having demonstrated commitment to at least one key element of sustainability in the judging criteria.
  • Special Recognition
    • Special Recognition for Outstanding Sustainability Initiative will be granted to organizations with excellent sustainability initiatives.
    • Special Recognition for Creative Sustainability Idea will be granted to organizations demonstrating exceptional creativity in their sustainability initiatives.

JUDGING PROCESS

All participating organizations are required to fill out and submit an online Entry Form on or before 17 February 2017. The Board of Examiners will conduct initial screening, select the finalists of Hong Kong Sustainability Award and propose recipients of the Certificate of Excellence and Special Recognition. All finalists of Hong Kong Sustainability Award will be interviewed by the Panel of Judges, who will decide on the winners of the Hong Kong Sustainability Award, and recipients of the Certificate of Excellence and Special Recognition. The Board of Examiners may conduct site visits when necessary. All the results of the awards will be announced at the Award Presentation Ceremony during which a sharing session of winners will be held.
