Hong Kong Companies Rank the Second Among Australia, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore in Management Capabilities

28/2/2014

The Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) is pleased to present the inaugural "2013 Hong Kong Management Capability Index" (HKMCI). Results of the index was announced and presented by Dr Victor Lee, Executive Director of the HKMA at the Fuji Xerox/HKMA 2014 Leadership and Management Seminar Series on "Entrepreneurship" which was held today (Friday, 28 February 2014).

This first HKMCI assessment presents Hong Kong organizations with the opportunity to benchmark themselves against organizations of a similar type and size and, in an era of global mobility, to benchmark against comparable international organizations. In highlighting areas of strength and weakness, the MCI will help Hong Kong organizations to direct their attention to priority areas for improvement.

Management Capability Index
First developed by the New Zealand Institute of Management, the Management Capability Index is now adopted by five countries - Australia, India, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore - as national standard for measuring and evaluating management performance in their respective economies.

Management capability is essentially the application of management competencies within an organization to achieve desired outcomes. Excellence in management capability is an integral marker of strong organizational performance.

The MCI is based on an organization leader`s self assessment of 10 key drivers of management capability that contribute to sustainable performance and profitable business growth. The HKMCI converts the evaluation of management performance into an index, which can be used to compare between the MCI of other organizations or countries/economies.

The 10 key drivers of management capability include:
  • Visionary and strategic leadership
  • Performance leadership
  • People leadership
  • Financial management
  • Organization capability
  • Application of technology and knowledge
  • External relationships
  • Innovation - products and services
  • Integrity and corporate governance
  • Results and comparative performance

Key findings
The online survey was conducted by the HKMA in late 2013 with a total of 152 respondents from across Hong Kong organizations.

According to the research study, the overall HKMCI is 73.6 (of a potential 100 capacity).  This indicates that Hong Kong organizations are performing at less than three-quarters of their capability.

The MCI indicates that Hong Kong organisations observe themselves as being most capable in the area of Integrity and Corporate Governance, which achieved a score of 84.9 - well above the overall MCI. This was followed by Financial Management (78.2), and External Relationships (76.1). This lead score for Integrity and Corporate Governance inspires confidence that Hong Kong organizations take the importance of sound governance practices seriously.

Hong Kong organizations assess themselves as least capable in the areas of Organization Capability (68.3), and Innovation - Products and Services (69.3).

International Comparisons
On an international comparison, Hong Kong`s overall rating compares favourably with results obtained from the latest MCI findings in India (76.8), Malaysia (72.0), New Zealand (71.9), Australia (70.3) and Singapore (69.2). he results show Hong Kong management`s overall ranking is second only to India, and ranks second highest in Financial Management (78.2) and Visionary and Strategic Leadership (73.2) when compared with survey results from New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, India and Singapore.

Conclusions
The 2013 HKMCI results indicate a sound strategic, governance and financial base across Hong Kong organisations. This provides a solid platform from which to foster innovation, improve organizational capability and encourage a greater global focus.

While the overall category score for Organisation Capability is relatively weak, this suggests that organizations in Hong Kong may, like other countries / economies in the survey, need to adopt a more adaptive management style conducive to the rapid pace of change that characterises the 21st century. The rejuvenation of organizational structures and management approaches through training and professional development to meet contemporary challenges should be a priority focus area for improvement for many organisations.
