WINS THE TOP PRIZE OF THE 2010 HKMA QUALITY AWARD

The results of annual HKMA Quality Award, one of the most prestigious business awards in Hong Kong, were proudly announced by Dr David Sun, BBS, JP, Chairman of the Organizing Committee; and Chairman & Managing Partner, Far East Area of Ernst & Young, during the press conference of the Award held on Thursday, 2 September 2010 at the InterContinental Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited is awarded the Gold Award in recognition of its great commitment to Totally Quality Management. BOC Group Life Assurance Company Limited is awarded the Silver Award. Cathay Pacific Catering Services(HK) Limited is awarded the Bronze Award. The Special Award for SMEs goes to Uchiya Hong Kong Limited.

First launched in 1991 by The Hong Kong Management Association, the annual HKMA Quality Award aims to reward commitment in an age of change, and to bring public recognition to those organizations that have achieved outstanding standards of quality and made a lasting commitment to the process of quality management. A special Award for SMEs was introduced in 2006 to encourage their pursuit of Total Quality Management.

This year, the applicants coming from a broad spectrum of industries prove the reach and influence of the Award among the local business community. Commenting on the winners, the Panel of Judges and the Board of Examiners are deeply impressed with the efforts made by winners in understanding the needs of their customers. Following are some brief but specific comments on each winner.

GOLD AWARD WINNER:

Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited
Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (Hactl) is the world`s leading international air cargo terminal operator. Located at Hong Kong International Airport, the world`s busiest airport for international air cargo, Hactl has played a key role in enhancing Hong Kong`s position as the international air cargo hub and gateway to China. Since 1976, the company has been actively seeking to strengthen Hong Kong`s position through innovative services and world-class facilities. Hactl invested more than US$1 billion in SuperTerminal 1, creating a key infrastructure for the cargo community in Hong Kong. Currently the company is serving close to 90 international airlines.

With the vision of “always become the preferred air cargo terminal and logistics service provider in Asia”, Hactl has earned its reputation as the leader in the air cargo industry in Hong Kong. In the light of its vision, the company has been expanding its operations in mainland China. Internationally, Hactl is also recognized as a leader, which has attained the certification of Safety Audit for Ground Operations by the International Air Transport Association. The company has also won a number of international awards and accolades. In terms of reliability, Hactl has maintained a very low cargo mishandling rate of less than 270 cases in every 10,000 consignments

SILVER AWARD WINNERS:

BOC Group Life Assurance Company Limited
Bank of China Group Life Assurance Co Ltd (BOCG Life) entered the Hong Kong market in 1998 and has been offering wealth management, retirement, traditional and investment-linked life insurance products to its customers. The company has significant accomplishment in its market position over the past few years through a clear corporate vision, well-established core values and visible senior leadership. BOCG Life has a wide bank distribution network in Hong Kong with over 280 branches and has a representative office in Beijing to aid the company’s future expansion in China.

With strong sales growth rates recorded, BOCG Life’s market position improved from the 8th in 2008 to the 5th in 2009. The number of customers also showed steady growth from 2006 to 2009. BOCG Life’s recent overall Employee Engagement Score of BOCG Life is higher than that of the Hong Kong Industry Average, and both the staff turnover and absenteeism rates are low. Strong leadership, committed workforce, along with well-established processes and performance measurements are the key success factors of BOCG Life in striving towards the leading position in the market.

BRONZE AWARD WINNER:

Cathay Pacific Catering Services(HK) Limited
Cathay Pacific Catering Services (CPCS) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cathay Pacific Airways. It is one of three in-flight catering services providers to international airlines operating out of Hong Kong International Airport. CPCS serves over 60,000 meals daily, 365 days per year, to 34 airlines. The company employs over 1,500 staff in a fairly flat organization structure, with 80% in operations and production. The company has a 43% market share of scheduled flights and a 63% market share of all meals supplied, generating an annual turnover of over HK$1billion.

CPCS successfully engages its customers using two sales strategies (customer acquisition and customer retention), based on a Customer Segmentation Model. With active participation from key managers, the company effectively uses a variety of channels to communicate with customers and staff about the company’s brand values, business results and customer service results. And CPCS has achieved competitive advantage in innovative product development, including accreditation in Halal and Kosher kitchen, and ISO 14000.

SPECIAL AWARD FOR SMES:

Uchiya Hong Kong Limited
Uchiya Hong Kong (UHK) was established in 1986 and is a subsidiary of Uchiya Thermostat Company Limited (UTC). Uchiya mainly produces safety products like, bimetallic thermostats, thermal protectors, and breakers for electrical, electronic and automotive industries. With its mission of “providing safety to society with our products and service”, UHK has put its organizational focus on improving reliability of its products since its inception. And top management takes the initiative to implement various international standard programmes to introduce stringent quality, environmental protection, occupational health and safety measures in the company.

The company’s special focus is placed on building up long-term relationships with existing key customers, channels including customer visit, survey, and trade exhibition are employed to deepen the understandings of requirements of these accounts. Formal customer feedback is gathered for detailed analyses to identify areas for improvement. UHK manages to maintain high customer satisfaction level with zero product return in the past few years. Internal product defects rate is also under control and is lower than both internal targets and industry average.
