The Annual General Meeting of the Hong Kong Management Association was held on Tuesday, 8 July 2008 at its headquarters. |
During the 47th Annual General Meeting of The Hong Kong Management Association held on Tuesday, 8 July 2008 at its Headquarters, Dr The Hon David K P Li GBM GBS JP, Chairman of the Association, was pleased to report that the Association offered more than 2,000 courses last year with a total enrolment of more than 45,000.
As the Hong Kong economy now dominates by the service sector, human capital is the most valuable asset. Staff training and development is assuming an ever greater role, as companies seek to enhance this valuable asset and differentiate themselves from their competitors. Dr Li pointed out that companies now are devoting an ever greater share of their budgets to human resources. In the past, companies were content to encourage staff to take outside courses. Today, there is an ever growing focus on in-house programmes, targeted toward specific training objectives. Our Association has put great effort into building up our capability in in-house training for service-oriented organizations. These in-house programmes focus on problem solving at the level of the individual company. We are in essence acting in partnership with member companies to address personnel development and management issues, said Dr Li.
The HKMA has also addressed a related trend over the past year. The need for work-life balance has come into sharper focus as our economy becomes more complex. We now expect our managers to bring well-rounded experience to the job, to act proactively to solve problems and to think creatively for the future. Pursuit of interests outside work helps foster a healthy outlook on life, and allows managers to gain well-rounded experience that will enhance productivity at work, added Dr Li. During the past year, the HKMA launched a series of new courses aimed at promoting work-life balance.
