A team code-named "Taikoons"
from John Swire & Sons emerged as the Champion of the Hong Kong Management
Game today (5 August) by outperforming six other finalist teams.
The Management Game is a simulation exercise making use of the computer
program SIMBUSI to simulate a competitive business environment.
In the Hong Kong Final, each of the seven teams became a company managing
a company which sells puffy toys in different markets: an export market,
an outlet in an amusement park and its own stores. Their business objective
was to outperform all other competitors and return the highest profit.
"You have to think about allocating your limited resources to your
best advantage, remembering that you are competing against other companies,
not the computer," Mr Russell Morris, Software Designer and Developer
of this SIMBUSI simulation software.
"A Simulation gives participants the chance to learn and practise
management skills at a very high level whilst requiring few qualifications
other than common sense and teamwork," Morris adds. Morris has led
a number of successful programmes in Europe, Australia, America and Asia
for a wide range of companies.
At the end of the six periods, "Taikoons" from John Swire &
Sons reaped a total of $14.45 million profit and won the honour of Hong
Kong champion. The team named "CUHK" from The Chinese University
of Hong Kong became the first runner-up, and the team named "Destiny"
from Department of Industrial & Manufacturing Systems Engineering
of the University of Hong Kong came third.
The champion team was awarded a cash prize of HK$25,000 donated by CLP
Power Hong Kong Ltd, four airtickets to Singapore sponsored by Cathay
Pacific Airways Ltd and the SCMP Morning Post Perpetual Trophy sponsored
by the South China Morning Post.
The first runner-up, led by Mr Derek Yung, received a cash prize of HK$10,000.
The second runner-up, led by Mr Haeley Leung, was awarded a cash prize
of HK$5,000. All cash prizes were donated by CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd.
