"King of Power Tools" Mr Roy Chung JP is Awarded
Doctor of the University(Honoris Causa) by the University of Newcastle, Australia

Mr Roy Chung Chi Ping JP, Group Managing Director of Techtronic Industries Co Ltd and a member of the Council of the Hong Kong Management Association, is awarded Doctor of the University (honoris causa) by the University of Newcastle, Australia.

Widely recognized as the `King of Power Tools", Mr Roy Chung Chi Ping JP, Co-founder and Group Managing Director of Techtronic Industries Co Ltd (TTI) and also a member of the Council of the Hong Kong Management Association, is awarded Doctor of the University (honoris causa) by the University of Newcastle, Australia in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the industrial and educational development in Hong Kong. The Graduation Ceremony was successfully held on Saturday, 22 July 2006 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel.

During the ceremony, Professor Nicholas Saunders, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Newcastle commended that `Mr Chung is an outstanding businessman … … Mr Chung is a fine role model for the graduates of the University, regardless of their field of study."

As a self-made man, Dr Chung started his career as a storekeeper in a Global Company, ITT (International Telephone & Telegraph Corp) during the 70`s. His entrepreneurial spirit has led him to search out opportunities to further develop his career. Dr Chung, with his German partner, Mr Horst Pudwill, founded TTI in 1985 and has built his company from the ground up to today a world power tool leader. With his visionary leadership and business acumen, the company achieved remarkable growth over the past two decades from an annual turnover of less than US$40m to close to US$3 billion in 2005.

Dr Chung is a well-respected and dynamic industrialist and has earned great acclaim for his invaluable contributions to the industrial sector in Hong Kong. His tireless dedication to promoting the Advanced 3D CAD/CAM Popularization Programme to enhance the competitiveness of the industry is just one of the good examples. Dr Chung holds positions on a number of government board and committees to promote Hong Kong`s industries. He is currently Vice Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and President of the Hong Kong Young Industrialists Council; a non-official member of Committee on Economic Development and Economic Cooperation with the Mainland – Commission on Strategic Development of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Chairman of the Electronic Appliances Industry Advisory Committee of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and a Member of the Steering Group on the Promotion of Innovation and Design of the Innovation and Technology Commission. He was also the Founding Chairman of the Hong Kong Electrical Appliances Manufacturers Association Ltd.

Dr Chung is also very committed to higher education and learning, where he has made significant contributions in Hong Kong. He is currently Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and actively involves in the formulation of the University`s policies. He is also a Member of the Advisory Board for the Faculty of Business of the Lingnan University and a Member of the Council of the Hong Kong Vocational Training Council. Dr Chung has shown great concern for the development of the youth in Hong Kong. He establishes the Techtronic Industries Co. Ltd. Scholarship and his company regularly participates in the Government`s "Youth Work Experience & Training Scheme" and "One Company One Job" initiatives.

Dr Chung`s outstanding accomplishments and commitment to community contributions have earned him numerous awards and recognitions: he was awarded the Justice of Peace in 2005 by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Fellow by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2005; Outstanding IEBMP Alumni Award by the University of Warwick in 2002; Fellow by the Hong Kong Management Association in 2000; an Industrial Fellow of the Manufacturing Group in the School of Engineering at the University of Warwick, his alma mater in 1999; the Young Industrialist Award of Hong Kong by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries in 1997; he was named in 1996 Honourable Citizen of Dongguang Province and Outstanding Foreign Investor of Guangdong Province.

At the graduation ceremony, 112 graduates of the Doctor of Business Administration and Master of Business programmes jointly organized by the University of Newcastle and the Hong Kong Management Association were also awarded the Master and Doctorate degrees.

Doctor of Business Administration, DBA
The programme offered in Hong Kong is an advanced standing programme, aiming to train student`s analytical and problem-solving abilities in order to face the global challenges. Case research is one of the important parts in the programme. Students have to take eight courses plus a literature review, research proposal and a dissertation (approximately 30,000 to 40,000 words) to complete the Degree over two years of study.

Master of Business, MBus
The Master of Business is structured for executives from all industries to enhance their knowledge of management as well as qualification. It is a 12-month part-time programme comprising 8 course units delivered in four terms of 6-8 weeks study schedule. Each course unit involves face-to-face teaching, which will be delivered as intensive seminars in Hong Kong, by lecturers from Newcastle Graduate School of Business (NGSB). The programme focuses on case and strategic analysis, skills such as leadership, team building, presentation and debating can be improved through group interactions. Graduates of the Master of Business programme can be granted Direct Entry Status to Year two of the Doctor of Business Administration programme by the University of Newcastle in Hong Kong,
