The HKMA 45th Anniversary Dinner

THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE, THE HON DONALD TSANG SPEAKS AT
THE HKMA 45TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER
20 OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS AND COMPANIES ARE RECOGNIZED

The Chief Executive, The Hon Donald Tsang delivered a speech to over 600 members and guests of the Hong Kong Management Association at its 45th Anniversary Dinner on Monday, 12 December 2005.

Fellowships and Charter membership
During the occasion, 18 new Fellows and Charter Members were presented. Fellows are individuals who have distinguished themselves in the management field either by example or by contributing towards the general body of theory, philosophy and management practice. The seven new Fellows this year are:

  • Mr Andrew Brandler, Chief Executive Officer, CLP Holdings Ltd;
  • Mr Clement K M Kwok, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, The Hong Kong & Shanghai Hotels Ltd;
  • Mr Shih Wing Ching JP, Chairman, Centaline Group;
  • Mr Kennedy Y H Wong BBS JP, Managing Partner, Philip K H Wong, Kennedy Y H Wong & Company Solicitors & Notaries;
  • Mr Michael R P Smith OBE, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited;
  • Dr Patrick P K Wu JP, Vice Chairman & Executive Director, Wing Lung Bank Ltd; and
  • Dr Allan Zeman GBS JP, Chairman, Lan Kwai Fong Holdings Limited.

Charter Members are outstanding corporate bodies or companies, which are admitted by invitation only. The eleven new Charter Members this year include:

Management Development Credit Unit (MDCU) Award
To recognize the achievement of companies in staff training and human resources development, two companies were awarded the Management Development Credit Unit (MDCU) Award, including the Bank of Communications and Goodwill Management Limited (Goodwill). The Bank of Communications is awarded for sponsoring the largest number of training hours and staff members on the management training programmes organized by the Association while Goodwill Management Limited is awarded for the most significant growth in both the number of training hours and staff members sponsored on the management training programmes offered by the Association.

Founded in 1908, Bank of Communications is one of the banks with the longest history in China. Having listed onto the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in June 2005, Bank of Communications became the first mainland commercial bank listed in Hong Kong. Today, Bank of Communications has a vast network of branches and sub-branches in 137 major cities in China with 2,505 sub-branches. The Bank has established overseas branches in Hong Kong, New York, Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul and representative offices in London and Frankfurt. Since its commencement of business 71 years ago, the Hong Kong Branch has striven hard to offer all-round financial services through its 39 sub-branches, BCOM Securities Co., Ltd., China Communications Insurance Co., Ltd. and Bank of Communications Trustee Ltd.

Bank of Communications Hong Kong Branch are truly grateful to be awarded the Management Development Credit Unit Award by the Hong Kong Management Association for the second time. It stated that, "Bank of Communications believes that talented staff is an important asset for the continuous development of a company. We are committed to upgrade the knowledge and skill of our staff by offering various training courses and workshops. Since the establishment of our Training & Development Centre, we have organized numerous courses with the application of new teaching equipment and techniques to meet the needs of our business development. We also provide study allowances and rewards to encourage our staff to pursue new knowledge. This year, our Head Office had upgraded the Centre to be the Overseas Training & Development Centre."

The Branch added that, "We will continue to work closely with the HKMA in staff training and development with the goal to better serve our customers by offering quality and comprehensive banking services. We would like to take this opportunity to express our most sincere gratitude to the HKMA for its continuous support in our staff training."

Goodwill is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Henderson Land Development Co Ltd (Henderson). Goodwill is mainly responsible for managing the investment portfolio of Henderson including large-scale shopping arcades, office towers, service apartments and industrial buildings, providing one-stop property management services. It manages over 35 properties with the total gross floor areas of over 7,480,000 square feet.

As stated by Mr Patrick Sit, Deputy General Manager, Goodwill Management Limited, "Goodwill appreciates the importance of providing comprehensive quality service after lease and strives to provide valuable customers with excellent and whole-hearted management services at all times. Staff development is crucial to achieve this end. Our staff are encouraged to pursue further study while regular training and workshops are organized in order to upgrade the quality of our service and to keep in pace with time."

He further highlighted that, "we are honoured and proud to be awarded of the MDCU Award 2005 by the Hong Kong Management Association. We are committed to attain total customer satisfaction and strive for serving our customers better through ongoing enhancement of our staffs` skills and knowledge. We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the Hong Kong Management Association for its recognition of our effort and its expertise in staff development and training."

Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) Graduation Ceremony
The Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) Graduation Ceremony was also held at the dinner. This year, more than 450 students successfully completed and graduated from the programme. Established by the Hong Kong Management Association in 1975 and jointly organized with Lingnan University since 1998, the DMS aims to meet the needs of in-service managers and executives who seek a formal education in modern business management. More than 13,000 students have been graduated from the programme. The Diploma is widely recognized by overseas universities as equivalent to a formal degree. Graduates are also granted membership or exemptions by a number of prominent professional institutes.
