The Award for Excellence in Training was introduced by The Hong Kong Management Association in 1990 with the aim of giving public recognition to trainers and companies for the contribution that training can make to corporate results. This year, the award has included a new individual category to give recognition for individual trainers who have made significant contribution to the human resources development of their companies as well as the whole community. The Campaign Award has also been enhanced by adding the “Special Award for SMEs”.

The judging process of the Award is simple but comprehensive. For the Campaign Award, the participating companies were required to give a simple verbal presentation of their training to the Board of Examiners at a Shortlisting Interview. Shortlisted entries would be invited to submit a five-page summary of their training programmes. The best six entries would be selected for the final presentation seminar entitled "Benchmark Your Training Practices with Some of the Excellent Companies". The six finalists would deliver a presentation before the Panel of Adjudicators who would then decide on the winners of the Award.

All entrants of Individual Award needed their company’s nomination to enter the judging process. They were required to submit a four-page written submission in English explaining their achievements in human resource development.

All entrants would be invited to a Presentation and Interview Session during which they would be given an opportunity to design and deliver a short training session to be followed by an interview in either English or Cantonese to the Board of Examiners. The Board of Examiners would decide on the winners of the Outstanding New Trainer Awards and Distinguished Trainer Awards. The top three winners of the Distinguished Trainer Awards would be invited to present before the Panel of Adjudicators at the final presentation seminar to compete for the Trainer of the Year Award.

Members of the Panel of Adjudicators this year include: Mr S K Cheong, General Manager - Broadcasting, Television Broadcasts Ltd; Mr Samuel Lai, Chief Executive Officer – Acting, Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation; Mr C K Lau, Chairman & CEO, The Recruit Publishing Co Ltd; Mr Dick Lee, Commissioner, Hong Kong Police Force and Mr Y K Pang JP, Executive Chairman, Zung Fu Company Ltd.
