A team code-named Dream Seekers from the Hong Kong
and China Gas Co Ltd emerged as the Champion of the Hong Kong Management
Game today (24 July) by outperforming eight other finalist teams.
At the end of the six periods, Hong Kong and China Gas Co Ltd named Dream
Seekers reaped a total of $4.65 million profit and won the honour of
Hong Kong champion. The team from MBA Association of the Open University
of Hong Kong led by Ms Freda Kong became the first runner-up and the team
from BNP Paribus led by Ms Teresa Chan came third.
The Management Game is a simulation exercise making use of the computer
programme SIMBUSI to simulate a competitive business environment.
In the Hong Kong Final, each of the nine teams became a company managing
a garment company manufacturing different kinds of T-shirts. Their business
objective was to outperform all other competitors and return the highest
profit.
However, like in the real world, they faced a number of difficult situations
and had to try their best to formulate strategies to get around them.
For example, in earlier periods, they had to choose from amongst a number
of marketing activities within their limited budget.
You have to think about allocating your limited resources to your best
advantage, remembering that you are competing against other companies,
not the computer, Mr Russell Morris, Software Designer and Developer
of this SIMBUSI simulation software.
A Simulation gives participants the chance to learn and practise management
skills at a very high level whilst requiring few qualifications other
than common
sense and teamwork, Morris adds. Morris has led a number of successful
programmes in Europe, Australia, America and Asia for a wide range of
companies.
SIMBUSI is built on a multi-language platform and thus it can also be
used in non-English speaking countries.
The champion team was awarded a cash prize of HK$25,000 donated by CLP
Power Hong Kong Ltd, four airtickets to Auckland sponsored by Cathay Pacific
Airways Ltd and the SCMP Morning Post Perpetual Trophy sponsored by the
South China Morning Post.
