The results of the annual HKMA Quality Award, one of
the most prestigious business awards in Hong Kong, were proudly announced
by Mr Alfred Chan, Chairman of the Awards Organizing Committee, during
the press conference of the Award held yesterday (24 June 2004) at the
InterContinental Hong Kong Hotel.
CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd is awarded the Overall Winner in recognition
of its great commitment to Total Quality Management. Hongkong Post and
MTR Corporation Ltd are awarded the Certificates of Excellence while
Amoy Food Company Ltd, CITIC Ka Wah Bank and Techtronic Industries Co
Ltd are awarded the Certificates of Merit.
First launched in 1991 by The Hong Kong Management Association, the
annual HKMA Quality Award aims to reward commitment in an age of change,
and to bring public recognition to those organizations that have achieved
outstanding standards of quality and made a lasting commitment to the
process of quality management.
This year, around 100 companies have shown keen interest in the Award
and 17 of them entered the competition. The applicants, coming from a
broad spectrum of industries such as public utilities, banking, property
management, business services, manufacturing, logistics, construction
and engineering, prove the reach and influence of the Award among the
local business community.
Commenting on the winners, the Panel of Judges and the Board of Examiners
are deeply impressed with the heavy emphasis the management has put in
direct communication with employees through the use of different tools.
Following are some brief but specific comments on each winner.
CLP Power Hong Kong Ltd Overall Winner
CLP Power has achieved outstanding performance in all seven judging
criteria. The Examiners are especially impressed with its strong commitment
to promoting cooperation, initiative, empowerment and innovation. CLP
Power adopts a distinctively well-structured corporate management framework
for developing the company`s vision and formulating directions. Extremely
effective systems are in place to determine customer requirements from
different segments. The company also establishes a sophisticated information
system, enabling its staff to gain access to real-time data and information
to support daily operation and business planning.
CLP Power has achieved exceptional results not only confined to financial
results, but also to customer-focused results, product and service results,
HR results and organizational effectiveness results.
Hongkong Post Certificate of Excellence
For Hongkong Post, the Examiners are impressed with the
leadership and vision of its top management which has contributed to
its successful evolution from a traditional government department to
a forward-looking, customer-oriented and market-oriented organization.
Customer and market knowledge are collected through various channels including
the very powerful 2,200 outbound delivery staff. To build a highly committed
and skilled workforce, Hongkong Post puts tremendous efforts in providing
excellent working conditions, eveloping effective teamwork, recognizing
contributions and achievements, and offering training at all levels.
MTR Corporation Ltd - Certificate of Excellence
MTR Corporation Ltd is one of the world`s most successful railway systems.
The company demonstrates a firm commitment to quality throughout the
organization. Multiple channels and tools for internal communication
are established to ensure all employees understand and work towards a
common corporate direction. The Examiners are impressed with its development
of a new Enterprise Information Portal, for data integration and knowledge
management, which supports operational effectiveness and manages organizational
performance. MTR also places a strong emphasis on its employees` well-being,
learning and motivation.
Amoy Food Ltd Certificate of Merit
Amoy Food Ltd establishes a strong culture of excellence driven by a
clear set of Vision, Mission and Values. The company successfully uses
different channels including research programmes, audits, tests and surveys
to identify customer requirements in improving product quality and identifying
new business opportunities. The Examiners are especially impressed with
its value creation processes which enable the company to create a set
of intangible assets such as brand capital, knowledge capital and social
capital.
CITIC Ka Wah Bank Certificate of Merit
For CITIC Ka Wah Bank, the Examiners are impressed with the determination
of its top management in striving for excellence. Effective bank-wide
communication channels, such as CEO Chat Room, are established to enhance
two-way communication with staff. The BE Quick Programme has been very
effective in promoting quality concepts and creating an environment of
empowerment, innovation and organization learning. An effective and systematic
approach to customer segmentation is adopted. The successful launch of
innovative products also helps reinforce long-term customer relationships.
Techtronic Industries Co Ltd Certificate of Merit
Techtronic Industries has demonstrated to the Examiners a strong commitment
to innovation and a continuous improvement culture. TTI treats customers
as business partners and aims to establish a long-term relationship with
them. The company invests heavily in technology and people to deliver
quality on a real-time basis. It also provides technical and quality
management support to equip suppliers and vendors with the knowledge
and skills to meet requirements. The Examiners highly commend its adoption
of a lean culture and an industry best practice approach with great emphasis
on product quality, supplier quality and competitiveness.
