HKMA and UTS Jointly Organize Higher Diploma Top-up Degree Programmes

The Hong Kong Management Association is pleased to announce the launch of the Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) and Bachelor of Engineering (BE) programmes with University of Technology, Sydney, UTS which provide an advancement pathway for local Higher Diploma graduates to study part-time in Hong Kong for a Professional Degree in Engineering.

The aims of the two programmes are to equip graduates with the skills and attributes needed for professional practice and professional leadership. The programmes are designed around the triple themes of academic development, personal development, and professional formation. The degrees cover various fields of practice (majors) in engineering, which candidate can choose from accordance with their major field of study in the Higher Diploma. They are:

- Civil engineering

- Electrical engineering

- Mechanical engineering

- Telecommunications engineering

- Computer systems engineering

Recognition

The BEngSc and BE awarded by the UTS through part-time studies in Hong Kong carries equivalent academic status and recognition to a Bachelor’s Degree conferred by the University to home full-time and part-time students in Australia.

Students enrolled in UTS courses leading to the Bachelor of Engineering degree may join the Institution of Engineers, Australia (IEAust) as Student members, and upon graduation become eligible for Graduate membership. To attain the Corporate grade of Member, certain professional competencies must be gained and demonstrated, normally in employment after graduation.

The BEngSc degree qualifies holders for membership of the IEAust in the category of Engineering Technologists.

Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc)

The Bachelor of Engineering Science is a 3-year-full-time equivalent programme consisting of 144 credit points (24 subjects) of study. Holders of a Higher Diploma in Engineering from Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) or local universities may be admitted with advanced standing and exempted from 96 credit points (16 subjects) of study. This is equivalent to the time requirement of the 1st and 2nd years of the course.

The remaining 48 credit points (8 subjects) may be taken over 4 semesters of part-time study in Hong Kong within 1.5 years. Students must complete 4 Core Subjects (24 credit points) and another 4 Field of Practice subjects (24 credit points) in the major they have chosen. Students may exit here with a Bachelor of Engineering Science (BEngSc) or transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (BE).

The programme will commence in March 2003 and the deadline for application is Wednesday, 15 January 2003. The course fee per BEngSc subject in 2003 / 2004 is HK$8,000. For students entering with an IVE or university engineering higher diploma or equivalent, the course fee for the BEngSc is HK$64,000 (HK$8,000 x 8 subjects).

Bachelor of Engineering (BE)

The Bachelor of Engineering is a 4-year full time equivalent programme consisting of 192 credit points (32 subjects) of study. Upon completion of the requirements for the BEngSc, students will be directly transferred to be the BE with advanced standing and exempted from 144 credit points (24 subjects). This is equivalent to the time requirement of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of the programme.

The remaining 48 credit points (8 subjects) are taken over 4 semesters of part-time study in Hong Kong within 1.5 years. Students must complete 3 Core subjects (18 credit points) and another 5 Field of Practice subjects (30 credit points) in the major they have chosen.

The course fee per BE subject in 2003 / 2004 is HK$8,000. For students entering the BE on transfer after completing the requirement of the BEngSc, the course fee for the BE is HK$64,000 (HK$8,000 x 8 subjects).

Face-to-face teaching

Each subject takes about 12 weeks during which there will be 18 hours of lectures given by UTS academic staff together with 14 hours of tutorials conducted by local staff who are practicing engineers or academic staff drawn from local tertiary institutions.

All face-to-face and examination sessions are held in weekday evenings and at weekends.

The University of Technology, Sydney (UTS)

The University of Technology, Sydney was originally established as the New South Wales Institute of Technology in 1965. In recognition of its success and high academic standing, the Institute was reconstituted as the University of Technology, Sydney on Australian Day 1988. On January 1 1990, UTS amalgamated with the Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education and the Institute of Technical and Adult Teacher Education to form the new and larger University of Technology, Sydney.
