China's entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO) will bring
both challenges and opportunities to Hong Kong. As Hong Kong's economy
becomes more closely integrated with that of its hinterland on the
Mainland, new opportunities, and new possibilities, are available
to those who can spot and take advantage of the emerging trends. Besides,
the policy on importation of talent makes the challenges faced by
the Hong Kong executives even more vigorous. In order to sustain the
competitive edge of Hong Kong, local executives should be well equipped
through life-long learning in order to survive in the knowledge-based
global economy of the 21st century.
Since 1994, the Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA) has cooperated
with Macquarie Graduate School of Management (MGSM) in offering a
number of high quality Master and Doctorate degree programmes.
Master of Management
The Master of Management programme is designed for professionals who
aspire to senior management positions within a chosen field such as
marketing or human resource management. It is a specialized Master
level programme that allows students to focus on a particular area
of management - in contrast to a more generalist degree such as the
Master of Business of Administration (MBA). :
The programme offered in Hong Kong is an intensive 18-month, part-time
programme specifically tailored to suit the needs of the local students
with active professional careers. The programme comprises a total
of 10 course units offered in a number of specializations including:
General Management, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management,
International Management, Financial Management, Logistics & Operations
Management and Information Technology Management. It is an interactive
programme (and not a distance-learning programme) because each course
unit involves 40 hours of face-to-face teaching in Hong Kong delivered
by the talented and experienced MGSM academics from Australia.
The programme is intensive and rigorous with a strong emphasis on
workplace relevance, drawing upon the student's own personal experience
to consolidate learning. Students will share the collective knowledge
and experience with their classmates by undertaking job-related projects
that focus on an issue within their own or chosen organization. Students
will be taught with 'real-world' case studies submitted by organizations
for research purposes. Students will be well equipped with an excellent
mix of theory and practice throughout the programme.
The teaching methods employed throughout the programme include: case
studies, syndicate work, computer simulations, research assignments,
formal lectures, guest presentations, role plays, class discussion
and site visits.
Applicants for the Master of Management are required to have a degree
from a recognized university or other tertiary institute; and a minimum
of three to five years' relevant work experience. Students must be
proficient in the English language both written and spoken, and meet
the requirement of the University.
Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Students who desire to pursue the MBA qualification after the completion
of the Master of Management programme are only required to undertake
an additional 6 course units. The MBA programme is designed for individuals
already in positions of responsibility, who have been identified as
possessing higher management and leadership potential. The programme
offers a comprehensive grounding in general management and prepares
students for the most senior positions in organizations - developing
expertise to steer the organization's strategy and achieve competitive
advantage.
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
The DBA programme is designed for professional managers who wish to
apply advanced research techniques to current issues of corporate
concern. For those who wish to pursue a career in consulting, or reach
the pinnacle of expertise within a given field of management, the
DBA programme is the next step following the Master programme.
The programme differs from a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) through its
focus on the application of knowledge within the context of an individual's
workplace and the different type of research development employed.
Structured as one-third coursework and two-thirds research, the DBA
programme will take between three to six years to complete and requires
students to undertake a comprehensive thesis-style dissertation under
the close supervision of the MGSM academic.
Applicants for the Doctor of Business Administration are required
to have a degree with honours class I or honours class II and/or a
relevant Masters degree; and a minimum of five years' management experience.
