Mr Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges joined The Hong Kong Jockey Club in 1998 and has been its Chief Executive Officer since 2007.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club is widely recognized as a world leader in horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment. Under the dynamic leadership of Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges, the Club has undergone significant transformation, developing its customer-centricity, transforming into a philanthropic powerhouse by more than quadrupling its regular charity donations, and raising the quality and profile of Hong Kong racing to a world-class standard. In 2016/17, the Clubˇ¦s total direct return to the community was HK$30.5 billion. It is Hong Kongˇ¦s largest single taxpayer, one of the cityˇ¦s major employers and one of the worldˇ¦s top ten charity donors.
Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges has a lifelong passion for horse racing and breeding thoroughbreds which enabled him to be highly successful in his career and life. As a soccer lover and once played in the German youth team, Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges decided to complete his university education with a Economic, Finance and Statistics degree at the University of Cologne. While everyone expected him to follow his father's footstep into the finance and insurance business, he got the chance to run one of the biggest stud farms in Germany. This led him to become Board Member of the German Breeders & Owners Association, and then Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the German Jockey Club responsible for all 21 racecourses in Germany and eventually the CEO of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, one of the most successful racing organisations in the world.
